LYNDON CENTER Vt.- Jordan Barnes' (Hardwick, Vt.) three-run pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the sixth capped an eight-run rally that propelled Lyndon State College to a 9-6 come-from-behind victory over Norwich University, in the nightcap of a doubleheader held at LSC's Skip Pound Field.
Trailing 6-1, the Hornets sent 12 men to the plate in the sixth to secure their ninth win of the season. Michael Johnson (Lyndonville, Vt.) had a two-run double to knot the score at 6-6 before Barnes, who was pinch-hitting for Eric Durocher (Townsend, Vt.), swatted his game-winning homer over the wall in left centerfield. Zach Maerder (Woodsville, N.H.) had three hits for Lyndon and Ryan Wimble (St. Albans, Vt.), playing his final game in a Lyndon State uniform, chipped in two doubles.
Sam Matthews (St. Johnsbury, Vt.), who relieved starter Jesse Ballard (Alburgh, Vt.) in the fourth, was credited with the win, allowing only one earned run on three hits in three and one-third innings of work. He struck out six Cadet batters and walked one. Joe Sleeman had three hits and Mitch Blair added two for Norwich. Ryan Kelly, the second of three Norwich pitchers in the game, took the loss.
In the opener, Maerder and Stetson Hicks (Whitefield, N.H.) collected two hits each to back the three-hit pitching of Josh Fletcher (Richford, Vt.) as Lyndon State recorded a 3-1 win. Fletcher went the distance, allowing no earned runs while fanning seven and walking two. Travis Dyke, Dustin Fleming and Aron Sweder had one hit each for Norwich, and Ian Caird absorbed the loss. He allowed one earned run on six hits while striking out three and walking two in five and one-third innings of work.
