LYNDON CENTER, Vt. - Castleton ran its North Eastern Athletic Conference Eastern Division record to 17-1 with a doubleheader sweep of Lyndon at Skip Pound Field. The Spartans won Game 1 8-0 and took Game 2 by a score of 14-5.
In the opener, Castleton led 3-0 in the top of seventh before plating five runs to decide the issue. Three Spartan singles, a Lyndon error and a two-run-single off the bat of Macyn Clifford fueled the uprising and made a winner of Adam Greenlese, who went the distance. He allowed no earned runs on four hits while striking out four and walking none.
Ryan Zielinski had three hits, including a double, to lead Cstleton while Clifford and David Brandt chipped in two each. Jeremy Rocheleau (Cambridge, Vt.) collected two hits for the Hornets and Devin Rhodes (Brattleboro, Vt.) was saddled with the loss. He allowed three earned runs on eight hits while fanning two and walking none in six innings of work.
In the nightcap, the Spartans put up nine runs in the third inning to coast to their 22nd victory of the season overall. Zak Mayo's two-run double and Clifford's three-run home run were the big hits in the rally. Zielinski turned in a 3-for-3 performance with three runs-batted-in and D.J. Detweiler added three hits to the Spartans' 16-hit attack. Joe Borowski had two hits - including a double - and knocked in two runs in the win.
Grant Davis went five inings to get the win, allowing four earned runs on eight hits while striking out four and walking none. Isaac Earle (Vernon, Vt.), the first of four Lyndon pitchers in the game, took the loss. He allowed six earned runs on eight hits while fanning none and walking none in two innings of work.
