Hornets drop a pair of one-run decisions to Grove City

Auburndale, FL - The Lyndon State College baseball team continued its play at the RussMatt Invitational Tournament in Auburndale, FL, on Thursday.  Unfortunately for the Hornets, they came up on the short end of the score in both games of a doubleheader against Grove City College, falling 4-3 in game one and 7-6 in game two.  The losses drop Lyndon to 1-4 on the season, while Grove City improves to 4-5.

The Hornets struck first in game one, as Ryan Cordiero (Rollinsford, NH) laced a one-out triple and scored on Andre Eason Jr.'s (Waterbury, CT) ground out.  Grove City tied things in the bottom of the second, as the Wolverines manufactured a run with an error, a hit batsman, and a fielder's choice.

Grove City took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third when Tyler Graham (Vandergrift, PA) singled with one out and Jesse Vlary (Cranberry Township, PA) followed with an RBI double.  The Wolverines tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Tanner Orner (Carlisle, PA) led things off with a single and came around to score on Graham's double.

The Hornets evend things up in the top of the sixth inning.  Jason Doris (Lincoln, RI) led off with a double.  Collin Clark (Rutland, VT) pinch ran for Davis and scored on a Codi Smith (Hartford, VT) single.  Smith later scored on Ian Machia's (Enosburg Falls, VT) sacrifice bunt, tying things at 3-3.

The Wolverines regained the lead in the bottom half of the sixth, as leadoff batter Travis Auth (Medina, OH) was hit by a pitch.  Auth moved to third on a base hit by Bobby Dulay (Youngstown, OH), and scored on Matt Dayton's (Allison Park, PA) ground out.

In the top of the seventh, Eason delivered a one-out double, putting the tying run in scoring position.  Ryder Thorton (Essex, VT) bunted Eason to third, but he was stranded there as Smith grounded out to end the game.

Micah Burke (Gilbert, AZ) went the distance to pick up the win for Grove City, while Davis Guyer (Lyndon, VT) went 6-1/3 innings and took the loss for Lyndon.

Lyndon again started quicky in the nightcap.  Ben Rollins (Lincolnville, ME) led off with a walk and Cordiero sacrificed him to second.  Four consecutive singles from Eason, Smith, David Laroche (Franklin, VT), and Chris April (Rollinsford, NH) staked the Hornets to a 3-0 lead.

Lyndon added two more runs in the bottom of the second.  Cordero reached with a two-out double and scored on Eason's triple.  Smith singled Eason home to make it 5-0 Hornets.

Grove City got on the board in the top of th third.  Derek Boyle (Stafford, VA led off with a walk.  Graham followed with a double, driving in Boyle.  Following back to back walks to load the bases, Auth's sacrifice fly scored one, and Clary's single drove in another, making it 5-3, Lyndon.

The Wolverines pulled even in the top of the fourth, as Dayton led off with a single and score on Boyle's triple.  Boyle then came home on Graham's sacrifice fly.

Grove City took the lead in the top of the sixth, when Dayton reached on a walk, moved to second on a fielder's choice, and scored on Graham's single.  The Hornets got back even in the bottom half when Thorton led off with a single, and eventually scored on a sacrifice bunt from Zach Hale (St. Johnbury, VT).

Burk was hit by a pitch to start the top of the seventh.  He advanced to second on an error, then scored the go ahead run on Bob Abbot's (Westfield, NJ) single.  Lyndon was unable to scratch out a run in the bottom of the inning, giving Grove City the 7-6 come from behind win.

Corey Thomas (Carlisle, PA) picked up the win in relief for the Wolverines, while Rollins took the loss for the Hornets.

Lyndon will continue play at RussMatt on Saturday, when they square off against Anna Maria College in a doubleheader starting at 9:00 am.  Grove City will face Martin Luther College on Friday.
