SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Lyndon edged Western New England College 78-76 in a non-conference contest to earn its first victory of the 2010-11 season. The Hornets were led by Phil Warrick (Springfield, Mass.) who came off the bench to score a team-high 18 points.
O'Bee Byrd (Waterbury, Conn.) posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds; while Jose Fortunato (Boston, Mass.) had a solid game with eight points, 10 rebounds, six steals and five assists. D.J. Campbell (Winooski, Vt.) tossed in 13 points for the Hornets, including four three-point field goals, and Ben Sackett (Lyndonville, Vt.) chipped in 11, knocking down three shots from beyond the arc.
Western New England College was led by Andre Shaw, who scored a game-high 20 points of the bench and also pulled down six rebounds. Brad Thomka contributed 16 points and six rebounds while senior center Conor Lomas pulled down a team-leading 10 boards. Chris Devine (Wilbraham, MA) had a solid all-around game with 11 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.
Lyndon State shot 43 percent (23-53) from the field and 35 percent (7-20) from beyond the arc. The Golden Bears struggled from the field shooting just 34 percent (25-74) for the game; but shot an impressive 96 percent (22-23) from the charity stripe. Western New England held a 52-35 edge on the boards and the two teams also combined for 52 fouls in the contest.
