Buzzer-beater sinks Lyndon in home opener

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. — Ryan Mickiewicz's three-point buzzer-beater provided the margin of victory as Western New England slipped by Lyndon 68-67 at Stannard Gymnasium.

With the score tied at 65-65 and less than 15 seconds remaining, Lyndon's Algie Lovelace (Washington, D.C.) stripped the ball from Mickiewicz near midcourt and was fouled on way to the basket with 06.3 left in regulation. After Lovelace sank both of his free throws, the Golden Bears pushed the ball to midcourt and called time out to set up the final play.

On the ensuing inbounds play, Mickiewicz took a pass near the top of the three-point arc, pushed the ball to his left and unleashed a desperation shot as time expired. The heave managed to hit the backboard at an odd angle and fall through the net for a game-winning shot that stunned the crowd of over 300 who gathered for Lyndon's home opener.

Andre Shaw led Western New England (1-0) with 19 points while Damon Alston chipped in 14 points and six rebounds. Kevin Wilkes added 14 points for the winners as well and Mickiewicz collected six rebounds, eight assists and two steals in the contest.
Ben Sackett (Lyndonville, Vt.) had a game-high 24 points for Lyndon, on 8-for-13 shooting from beyond the three-point arc, and Asa Smith (Cheltenham, Md.) had 19 points, seven assists and two blocks in his Lyndon debut. The tandem of John Williams (Springfield, Mass.) and Jason Gray (East Thetford, Vt.) grabbed nine rebounds each for the Hornets.
