NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team got off to a quick start and rode the momentum to a 14-1 victory over Lyndon at Alumni Field.
The Mariners scored twice in the opening five minutes of the contest and never looked back. Adam Grillo led all scorers with five goals and two assists for a season-high seven points. Shane Sullivan added four goals and an assist while Jordan Cook finished with three goals and three helpers.
Mitchell's defense kept Lyndon off the scoreboard in the first half. The Mariners built up a 6-0 lead by intermission thanks to a pair of scores from both Cook and Grillo. Josh Charles also potted his first goal of the year in the half as the Mariners outshot the Hornets 24-8.
Lyndon opened the second-half scoring when Max Ercole (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) found the back of the net just 1:16 into the stanza. Tim Patten (Springfield, N.H.) supplied the feed on the goal, Ercole's sixth of the season.
The game's remaining eight goals were all scored by the home side. Cook and Grillo notched their hat tricks with back-to-back scores in the third quarter that pushed the lead to 8-1 with 12:23 remaining. The Mariners later tacked on five goals in the fourth quarter—including three from Sullivan—for the final tally.
Mitchell goalie Peter Eshenfelder faced 17 shots and finished with four saves. Matt Reynolds (New Fairfield, Conn.) had a busier afternoon for the Hornets, facing 51 shots while making 12 saves.
Mitchell went 13-for-19 in face-offs that included a 10-for-13 effort from Josh Muckle. Chris Joy scooped up a game-high 10 ground balls and also caused a pair of turnovers.
