Lyndon rolls into NAC semifinal

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. — Lyndon reeled off four unanswered goals in the opening half  of play to coast to a 4-1 victory over Maine Maritime Academy in the quarterfinal round of the North Atlantic Conference men's soccer playoffs.

Richie Munster gave the Mariners a 1-0 lead at the 13:29 mark when he found the back of the net off a pass from Nate Tipton. The lead stood for 10 minutes until the Hornets' Kyle Mecham (Wilbraham, Mass.) headed home a cross from Emmitt Simpson (Barton, Vt.) to tie the score at 1-1.

Lyndon took the lead for good seven minutes later when Patrice Lumumba (Burlington, Vt./Republic of the Congo) took a through ball from Teague Coyle (Northfield, N.H.) on the left side, eluded a Maine Maritime defender and deposited a shot into the far corner of the net beyond the reach of Mariner's goalkeeper Randy Bartlett.

Phil Curll (Camden, Maine) upped the Hornet lead to 3-1 at 37:43 when he punched a corner kick off the foot of Tyler Bullard (Hyde Park, Vt.). Hornet sweeper Matt Browne (Seymour, Conn.) closed out the scoring in the contest with an unassisted tally from 15 meters out with 3:04 left in the half.

Jason Gray (East Thetford, Vt.) made two saves for Lyndon to get the win and Bartlett collected two saves as well. The Hornets outshot Maine Maritime 16-7 in the game and had five corner kicks to the Mariners' two.
