Lyndon secures bid to ECAC Tournament

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. — Despite a tough 3-1 loss to Thomas College in Saturday's North Atlantic Conference championship game, Lyndon has managed to extend its season by qualifying for a berth in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.

The tourney will open on Wednesday, Nov. 10 with the quarterfinal round and conclude with the semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 13 and Sunday, Nov. 14, respectively. The Hornets, the tournament No. 7 seed, will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Springfield, Mass. to battle second-seeded Western New England College. 

The Golden Bears (13-6-2) are led by freshmen the tandem of Andrew Rose and Ryan Williams. Both tallied eight goals this season and added one assists for a total of 17 points. Junior Shawn Fitzgerald (7G, 2A) and senior Alex Dos Santos (4G, 8A) chipped in 16 points each in the 2010 campaign and senior Justin Martins added six goals and three assists for 15 points.

Goalkeeper Sean Healey amassed eight wins and four shutouts on the season while earning a goals-against-average of .076 and a saves percentage of .830.

Lyndon (12-4-3) will counter with sophomore striker Patrice Lumumba, an All-NAC First Team selection, and junior midfielder Kyle Mecham, who took home All-NAC Second Team honors this past season.

Lumumba, a resident of Burlington, Vt., led the Hornets in scoring with 11 goals and three assists for a total of 25 points while Mecham, who hails from Wilbraham, Mass., and teammate Teague Coyle, a sophomore from Northfield, N.H., placed second in scoring on the squad with four goals, two assists and 10 points each.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jason Gray, a Thetford Academy graduate and All-NAC Second Team performer, collected 12 wins and six shutouts in 2010 with a goals-against-average of 1.14, and a saves percentage of .853.
Game time for Wednesday's quarterfinal contest is 1 p.m.
