CHICOPEE, Mass. – Joseph Coleman and Ziggy Jonathan each netted a pair of goals to lift Elms College to a 5-2 victory over Lyndon in a non-conference men's soccer game at Leary Field.
The Blazers struck early and often netting the game's first goal just eight minutes into the contest when Coleman found the back of the net following a great pass from Josh DiNoto to give Elms a quick 1-0 lead. Lyndon State responded five minutes later when Patrice Lumumba (Burlington, Vt./Democratic Republic of The Congo) knotted the score at 1-1 in the 15th minute of play, punching the ball into the left side of the net.
Jonathan then added the first of his two scores allowing the Blazers to regain the lead when DiNoto delivered another well placed ball which he blasted into the nylon to set the score at 2-1. Elms posted a two-goal cushion 10 minutes later when Coleman scored his second goal of the game. The Hornets cut the deficit to 3-2 when Lumumba received a through ball from Shane O'Donnell (Groton, Vt.) and capitalized with his second scoring strike with just under 10 minutes to play in the opening frame.
Leading 3-2 at intermission, Elms regained its offensive rhythm and pulled ahead to a two-goal lead when Jonathan used a Tavish Leland pass to secure his second goal and give the Blazers a 4-2 advantage. At the 65:21 mark, DiNoto executed a corner kick service which was headed into the goal by Leland to up Elms' advantage to 5-2.
Lyndon edged the Blazers in shot differential in the second half, 9-8, but could not register a goal as Blazers' senior goalkeeper Ryan Sullivan turned away five shots in the final 45 minutes and finished with seven saves to preserve the win.
