Lumumba shines as Hornets double-up Badgers

JOHNSON, Vt. – Lyndon earned a 4-2 victory over Johnson State in North Atlantic Conference men's soccer action.

Lyndon received a pair of goals from junior Patrice Lumumba (Burlington, Vt.) and single scores from Tyler Powell (Essex Junction, Vt.) and Andrew O'Brien (Ware, Mass.). Dustin Ameden (Jamaica, Vt.), Matt Browne (Seymour, Conn.), and Shane O'Donnell-Leach (Groton, Vt.) picked up assists. Johnson's Ryan Demars and Richie Perez each scored goals with Chad Koenig notching an assist on the Demars goal.

Lyndon's Jason Gray (East Thetford, Vt.) made two stops to earn the win in net. Sam Martin made the start for Johnson making two saves while Ryan Belen played the second half and saved five shots.

Johnson struck first when Koenig send a long, high pass up the middle of the field that Demars collected and was able to beat the final Lyndon defender and then chip a shot over Gray to make it 1-0 Johnson about 12 minutes into the match. Lumumba would strike nine minutes later when Browne sent a pass up the right side to Ameden who found Lumumba by himself in front of the net for the easy score.

Just 3:08 later Lumumba, this time unassisted, beat Martin from the left side to the far post making the score 2-1 Lyndon. With less than six minutes left in the first half, Powell would find a ball rolling towards him after a shot rebounded directly to him on the left side and he would not waste it.  Powell laced a shot under the crossbar for 3-1 score.

Johnson pulled within one score with just under 17 minutes to play when Perez made a nice individual set of moves up the middle of the field and beat Gray to the upper right corner of the goal. O'Brien would knock home the insurance goal with just: 32 seconds left to play with a shot that short-hopped Belen and got past him after getting a piece of the ball.
