RUTLAND, Vt. – The Lyndon men's tennis team evened its record at 1-1 on the season with an 8-1 victory over Green Mountain at the Vermont Sports and Fitness Club.
An endurance match between Lyndon's Mike Howard (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and John Corey (Bennington, Vt.) and the Eagle duo of Christopher Donovan and Samantha Tajirian kicked of the afternoon. Each side battled hard and the match required a tie-breaker to determine a winner. In the end, Howard and Corey pulled out a 9-8 (7-4) win.
The second doubles match saw Lyndon breeze to an easy 8-0 victory behind Tyler Schofield (Middleboro, Mass.) and Daniel Weiner (Wells, Maine), but the third doubles slot proved to be another tightly contested affair as Mike Desmond (Enfield, Conn.) and Joe Anderson (Norton, Mass.) narrowly defeated Green Mountain's Andrew O'Neill and Heeje Cho by a final score of 8-6.
Howard topped Donovan 6-1, 6-1 in first singles and Schofield beat Tajirian 6-4, 6-2 in second singles. Corey was involved in yet another long match in his third singles pairing with Laura McRee. Corey won the first set 6-1, but needed a tie-breaker to win the second set 7-6 (8-6), taking the match in straight sets.
In fourth singles Weiner beat Sam Snyder 6-3, 7-5 and in the fifth singles slot, O'Neill, last week's North Atlantic Conference East Player of the Week, came from a set down to defeat Desmond in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
In six singles, the Hornets' Wildens Fils (Stamford, Conn.) downed the Eagles' Nicole Cardish. 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3).
