CASTINE, Maine - Lyndon's 2011 season came to an end with a tough 3-1 loss to Maine maritime Academy in the quarterfinals of the North Atlantic Conference playoffs.
The Hornets got the scoring started in the first inning when Natalia Shams (Swampscott, Mass.) scored on a throwing error after a bunt by Tia Billado (Bellows Falls, Vt.) giving the Hornets the 1-0 lead. The Mariners quickly answered in the bottom of the first when Meghan Russell singled to right field and then stole second base. Brittany Hunt grounded out to shortstop but a throwing error allowed Russell to score and tie the game at 1-1.
MMA took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third when Leah Jackson launched her 8th home run of the season over the left field fence. The home run broke the previous school record of seven home runs in a season. The Hornets threatened in the top of the 5th, but failed to score, when Chelsea Watson (Eliot, Maine) was thrown out at home by Autumn Jones after a base hit to left field by Billado.
MMA struck again in the bottom of the 5th when Mallery Stanley drove in Jackson with a base hit to centerfield giving MMA the 3-1 lead and eventual victory. Casey McCloskey recorded the win for MMA pitching seven strong innings, giving up four hits while striking out eight batters. Meghan Gadapee (Littleton, N.H.) took the loss for Lyndon giving up nine hits and three runs over six innings of work.
