POULTNEY, Vt. – A solid effort in the first half could not propel Green Mountain past Lyndon as the Hornets sank several key free throws down the stretch to prevail 67-56 in North Atlantic Conference action.
Lyndon rocketed out of the gates, building a 14-3 lead just over five minutes into the opening frame. Each starter for the Hornets contributed offensively during the opening run The visitors would extend the lead to as many as 14 points before Green Mountain slowly began its comeback. Chelsea Paul scored 10 points in a span of 6:38 to help reduce the deficit and the Eagles were able to shrink the lead to 35-30 as the horn sounded to end the first half.
The second half saw the Hornets' lead sway anywhere from three points to 13 points as both teams made multiple runs. Late in the game, the Eagles had the lead down to 58-52 with just over two minutes remaining, but Lyndon's Emily Slayton (Jefferson, Vt.) hit six free throws down the stretch to sseal the win for the Hornets.
Donna Lawson (Irasburg, Vt.) was the Hornets' leading scorer with 14 points while adding eight rebounds. Dannika Dobrowski (Plainfield, Vt.) also scored in double-figures with 10 points to go along with eight boards. Paul finished the game with the 18 points and tucked away seven rebounds in the loss.
