Strong Start Boosts Hornets Past Beavers

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – The Lyndon State College women's basketball team started the game off on an 11-0 run and never looked back against the University of Maine at Farmington Saturday, sealing the weekend 2-0 with a 74-66 victory in North Atlantic Conference play.

Gabrielle Foy (Wilton, Maine) drained in 18 points along with Faith Richard's (Acushnet, Mass.) season high of 16.  Despite fouling out, Mikayla Hodge (Newbury, Vt.) recorded her 8th double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Morgan Crocker (Boothbay, Maine) and Kennadi Grover (Cushing, Maine) led with 12 points apiece and four and three rebounds, respectively.

The Hornets started out strong on an 11-0 run until Crocker hit one beyond the arc at the 6:56 mark.  After the Hornets collected five more, the Beavers answered with five of their own making it 16-8.  The Hornets would finish out the first stanza ahead 23-11.

The Hornets gained their largest lead of the game of 20 points at the 7:15 mark of the second quarter.  The Beavers found themselves trailing 41-29 going into the second half.

A 6-0 boost brought the Beavers within six.  After a free-throw and jumper by Marley Harmon (Buxton, Maine) and Alexis Britch (Essex Junction, Vt.), the Hornets were ahead 44-35.  Defensive pressure helped the Beavers get within five at 44-39 at the 5:30 mark in the third quarter but the Hornets finished out the period on a 12-4 run for the 56-43 advantage.

The Hornets maintained momentum in the final leg and wrapped up the weekend with a 74-66 victory.
