LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – The Lyndon State College women's basketball team grasped a 64-61 North Atlantic Conference overtime win over Maine Maritime Academy in Stannard Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
Mikayla Hodge (Newbury, Vt.) recorded a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds along with four blocks. Gabrielle Foy (Wilton, Maine) added 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals and Faith Richard (Acushnet, Mass.) pitched in 10 points.
Alayne Felix led the way for the Mariners with 21 points and 6 rebounds with Caitlin Kane's fourteen points and five rebounds.
After consecutive lead changes, the Hornets began their lead off of a pair of treys from Richard and Alexis Britch (Essex Junction, Vt.) and a layup from Hodge, making it 13-7 at the 4:35 mark. Each team answered shots back and forth with Mariah Ramos (Lebanon, N.H.) finishing off the first with a jumper to put the score at 19-13 in favor of the Hornets.
The Mariners got within reach with two consecutive baskets from Felix and Megan Mclean, but the Hornets extended their lead back out to seven at the 4:41 mark, 25-18. The Mariners were able to bring themselves within five, 29-24, to end the second stanza.
Within the first two minutes, the Mariners closed the gap to three. Victoria Carlson extended it back to five, but after a pair of free throws from the Mariners, the score was held at 33-30 for two minutes due in part to consecutive turnovers with solid defense on both ends. Britch broke the silence after draining a trey from the top of the arc to push the score to 36-30. The Mariners closed out the quarter on a 7-0 run to take back the lead at 37-36, their first lead since 6:43 in the first quarter.
The Hornets pushed the advantage back out to seven at the 8:03 mark with a 10-2 run to start the fourth quarter. Six straight brought the Mariners within one at 46-45. Each team scored in bunches until Melinda Ogden knocked in a trey to tie the game at 50-50 with 4:10 to go. The game was tied up again at 55-55 at the one minute mark after the teams traded points. On the following possession, Alissa Mitchell (Milton, N.H.) grabbed the rebound after a miss from Foy, allowing the Hornets to hold for the final shot. Foy drove the lane but couldn't get her shot to fall. The Mariners advanced the ball up the court but were unable to get a shot off before the buzzer, pushing the game to overtime.
The teams swapped free throws to make the score 57-57. Hodge hit a huge shot beyond the arc to push it to 60-57 with Carlson hitting a foul shot soon after. Alex Winchester tossed a layup in to put the score at 61-59 with two minutes to go. With 33 seconds left the Mariners sent Mitchell to the line where she knocked in one of two. Kristi Willey followed with a jumper for the Mariners to bring it within one at 62-61. Hodge knocked in two free throws to put the Hornets back up three. The Mariners called timeout to set up a play and advance the ball to the front court. The Hornet defense held strong in the final seconds, forcing the Mariners into a contested three and Foy grabbed the rebound as time expired.
