LYNDON CENTER, Vt. — Smith College raised its record to 2-2 on the season Wednesday with a 3-0 victory over host Lyndon. With the loss the Hornets fall to 2-3.
Chelby Wakefield gave the pioneers the lead for good with a goal at the 6:52 mark of the first half off a corner kick from Aidan Hitt. The game remained scoreless the rest of the period with Smith outshooting Lyndon 16-4 in the opening 45 minutes of play.
In the second half, Ewa Januszkiewicz upped the Pioneer lead to 2-0 by punching home a rebound of her on shot. Januszkiewicz's original shot, off a cross from Allie Rooney, was blocked by Lyndon defender Katy Ebner (East Hampstead, NH), but the rebound managed to find its way back to Januszkiewicz, who deposited a shot into the lower left corner of the net behind Hornet goalkeeper Dannika Dobrowski (Plainfield, Vt.).
Rooney would close out the scoring with less than five minutes left to play when she took a through ball from Hitt and found the far left side of the goal.
Cody Norris and Annabel Calhoun stopped a total of three shots to earn the shutout while Dobrowski made 15 save in the Lyndon net. Smith held a 34-6 advantage in shots-on-goal in the game and had three corner kicks to Lyndon's two.
