PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Carol Messler scored a pair of second-half goals Wednesday evening, her first two of the season, to lead the Plymouth State University women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Lyndon in non-conference action at Panther Field.
Cassie Graham added a goal and an assist for the home team as PSU stopped a three-game skid. The Hornets got a late goal from freshman Larissa Bargfrede (Baltimore, Vt.) to break up the shutout.
The Panthers put plenty of pressure on the Hornets' goal in the first half, outshooting the visitors 9-3, but managed only one goal. That came at the midway point when Graham took a shot from the right-hand side and beat the goalie to the lower left side of the net. It was Graham's third goal of the season.
Graham nearly scored her second goal of the game six minutes into the second half but her strong shot from the right side bounced off the cross bar. Fortunately for the Panthers, Messler was there to head the ball into the net for her first goal and a 2-0 PSU lead. Messler tacked on another goal seven minutes later, sprinting down the left side of the field and firing a long shot past the keeper just inside the left post.
PSU goalkeeper Chelsea Duval and the PSU defense were less than three minutes away from their first shutout but Bargfrede blasted a beautiful shot from about 20 yards out that found the top left corner of the goal to put the Hornets on the board. It was her first goal of the season.
The Panthers doubled up the Hornets in shots by a 22-11 count, and had an 8-2 margin in corner kicks. Duval finished with six saves to record the victory for PSU while Dannika Dobrowski (Plainfield, Vt.) made nine saves for Lyndon.
