Panthers blank Hornets
LYNDON CENTER, Vt. — The Plymouth State women's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 victory over Lyndon at the Dudley Bell Tennis Center.
The Panthers (3-4) jumped out to a quick 1-0 advantage in the doubles flights as Sara Burke and Molly Heartfield joined forces for an 8-5 triumph over Kayla Flynn (Johnston, R.I.) and Maria Parr (Montpelier, Vt.). Nitsa Ioannides and Andra Dion picked up the second team point for the visitors with an 8-4 victory in No. 2 pairs before Jane Duggan and Chelsea Thibeault put the wraps on a 3-0 doubles schedule with an 8-2 win in the No. 3 slot.
The first three singles matches saw only four games going the way of the Hornets (0-6), as Burke bested Flynn in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) before Paquette won a 6-0, 6-0 decision against Olivia Bernard (Westmore, Vt.). Ioannides recorded another straight-set victory for the visitors, topping Alexandria Maynard (East Hampton, Conn.) 6-1, 6-0.
Dion was the 6-0, 6-0 victor over the Hornets' Kelly Butler (Hubbardston, Mass.) before Duggan produced a 6-0, 6-2 verdict against Margaret George (Glover, Vt.). Completing the shutout for Plymouth was Thibeault, who took a 6-0, 6-0 decision against Heather Gibson (Hudson, N.H.) in the No. 6 singles slot.
