LYNDON CENTER, Vt. - The Lyndon State College women's volleyball team opened the 2016 season with a convincing 3-0 win over Johnson State College Thursday night in Stannard Gymnasium. The Hornets took the three sets 25-13, 25-14, and 25-20.
Strong offense pushed Lyndon out to an early 7-1 lead in the first set before Johnson answered with two straight points. Lyndon then rattled off seven straight points, including three aces from Faith Richard (Acushnet, Mass.) to take a commanding 14-3 advantage. The Hornets then coasted to a 25-13 win.
The second set was much of the same as the Hornets quickly grabbed the lead and didn't look back as they took the second set 25-14.
Things were looking up in the third set for Johnson as the Badgers took a quick 3-0 but the Hornets answered back, taking a 7-4 lead. Despite better offense from the Badgers in the third set, the Hornets would not give up the lead on their way to finish out the set, and the match.

Fellow senior Kelleigh Murtagh (Merrimack, N.H.) followed with seven kills and four aces. Richard had a match-high six aces and four kills in her debut.
