Lyndon second at NAC Championships
CASTINE, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington women's cross country team won its fourth consecutive North Atlantic cross country title at Maine Maritime Academy. The Beavers captured the women's title with a team score of 41, edging out Lyndon by a mere 11 points.
"I felt we had the potential to run a good race and personally I expected us to finish second," said Hornets' coach Chris Ummer. "Everyone ran well, but the most surprising thing to me is that we gave Farmington a run for their money. We may have lost by 11 points, but we made it a race. Farmington hadn't had anyone as close to them all year long."
Earning the Runner and the Rookie of the Year honors was Husson's Angela Stauble, with a time of 19:03.89. Castleton runners Maggie Klein and Amber Ruscoe finished second and third while Farmington's Salena Sykes and Caitlin Miller rounded out the top-five.
For Lyndon, all seven of its runners crossed the finish line with personal best times. Nicole Brown led the way in the seventh place with a time of 20:42.92 while Allynne O'Hearn finished right on her heels in eighth-place with a mark of 20:47.39. For their efforts, Brown and O'Hearn earned All-NAC First-Team honors.
"All of our athletes ran well today, so much so it's difficult to pick out any one runner based on their performance," said Ummer. "But Nikki (Brown) was definitely a pleasant surprise today. It was her final NAC Meet as a senior and she exceeded all expectations we had for her today."
Hornet harrier Susannah Powell came in 11th (20:52.93), Leah Morgan placed 15th (21:41.49) and Gabrielle Mathewson crossed the finish line in 17th place (21:50.55.). Powell and Morgan were named to the All-NAC Second-Team for their performances.
The Lyndon women return to action on Saturday, Nov. 6 when they take part in the ECAC Championships in Bristol, R.I. A start time for the meet has yet to be determined.
