Auburndale, FL - The Lyndon State College baseball team wrapped up its spring trip to the RussMatt Invitational Tournament today, falling to Penn State Abington, 11-4. The Hornets head back north with a record of 4-6, while the Nittany Lions improve to 2-5.
Abington jumped in front in the top of the first inning when Stevie Stevenson (Westhampton, NJ) led off with a single and stole second. Joesph Rizzo (Gibbstown, NJ) then reached on an error and Ryan McCarty (Yardley, PA) doubled home Stevenson and Rizzo. The Lions then capitalized on three Hornet errors in the top of the second to push across another run and extend their lead to 3-0.
The Hornets got on the board in the bottom of the second when Ben Rollins (Lincolnville, ME) walked to lead off the inning. Rollins moved to second on Chris April's (Rollinsford, NH) sacrifice bunt, then advanced to third on a Zack Hale (St. Johnsbury, VT) single. Zak Johnson (East Hampton, CT) then delivered a two-out single to score Rollins.
The Nittany Lions took advantage of several Hornet miscues to break things open in the top of the fourth. Brett Guaglionona (Abington, PA) and Jaden Himmelreich (Temple, PA) were both hit by pitch to open the inning. Himmelreich was picked off, but Stevenson reached on an error, advancing Guaglionona to third. After Stevenson stole second, Guaglionona scored on a wild pitch. A double from McCarty scored Stevenson. After Tyler Dipatri (Pedricktown, NJ) was hit by a pitch, back to back doubles by Paul Woodley (Levittown, PA) and Julio Aira IV (Miami, FL) drove in three more runs to make the score 8-1, Abington.
Abington added a single run in the top of the sixth before the Hornets got on the board again. Andre Eason Jr. (Waterbury, CT) singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Eason advanced to third on a single from Codi Smith (Hartford, VT), then scored on a throwing error.
Abington added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Himmelreich started things with a one-out single. Pinch hitter Jon Rivera (Egg Harbor City, NJ) then walked. following a wild pitch, McCarty delivered a single, scoring Himmelreich. Rivera came across home for Abington's final run, courtesy of a wild pitch.
The Hornets were able to score single runs in the bottom of the seventh and bottom of the eighth. In the seventh, Tucker Root (Middlefield, CT) led off with a triple and scored on Hale's sacrifice fly. Smith then led off the eighth and eventually scored on a fielding error. That was as close as the Hornets would come, however.
Michael Riley (Stratford, NJ) went the distance for Abington to pick up the win. Davis Guyer (Lyndon, VT) also went the distance and took the loss. Guyer struck out seven and only four of Abington's 11 runs were earned.
The Hornets are scheduled to play Plymouth State University this Sunday at 12:00 noon. The game will be played at Franklin Pierce University. Penn State Abigton will play King's College on Tuesday.
