Hornets drop both ends of doubleheader to Salem State

Northborough, MA - After Northern Vermont University-Lyndon pushed across three runs in the top of the seventh inning, Salem State University pushed across a run on an infield single in the bottom half of the inning to walk off with a 7-6 win in the nightcap of Friday's non-conference doubleheader.  With the win the Vikings completed the sweep, having captured the first game at the New England Baseball Complex by a 6-1 margin.  Salem State improves to 3-1 on the season, while Lyndon falls to 1-11.

Game 1 - Salem State 6, NVU-Lyndon 1

Salem State pitchers Luke Brennan and Bryce Dawson limited Hornet bats to two singles, one from Ben Rollins (Lincolnville, ME) and one from Caleb Laroche (Frannklin, VT).  Meanwhile, the Vikings were able to deliver seven hits, including a solo home run from Traverse Briana and a three run double from Shawn Rebello.  Brennan went four innings to earn the win,and Dawson picked up the save.  Hornet starter Jake Jourdain (Becket, MA) went five innings, yielding all six runs, five earned, on five hits.  He struck out six Viking batters, but was saddled with the loss.

Game 2 - Salem State 7, NVU-Lyndon 6

The Hornets got the bats working in the nightcap, picking up ten hits.  Zak Johnson (East Hampton, CT) and Ryder Thornton (Essex, VT) each had a pair of hits, while Tyler Roberge (Essex, VT) laced a two-run double.  Matt Marquez delivered a two-run homer for the Vikings, while Brendan Green added a solo shot.  Brian Smith, the third of three pitchers for Salem State picked up the win.  James Mundy (Brentwood, NH) went the distance for the Hornets, yielding 11 hits and six earned runs while striking out three.

The Hornets return to action next weekend when they compete for the Clemente Cup in Lynn, MA.  Lyndon will play their first game of the tournament on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 pm against UMaine-Presque Isle.  They will then face tournament host Fisher College at 7:00 pm.  Play will continue on Sunday.
