Johnson, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's basketball team dropped a 78-76 decision to NVU-Johnson in North Atlantic Conference basketball on Saturday afternoon. The Badgers scored with 2.4 seconds to go to pick up their first victory in 16 starts this season. The Hornets fall to 2-16 overall and remain winless in seven NAC starts.
Johnson led throughout much of the first half before Zach Falkenburg's (Kirkville, NY) layup sent the Hornets to halftime with a 35-34 advantage. Lyndon extended their lead to as much as nine with 11:49 remaining before Johnson rallied, eventually building a five point lead with jsut over a minute left. A Falkenburg three pulled the Hornets within one, then a tip-in basket from Jahleel Gabriel (Springfield, MA) pulled the Hornets even with 21 seconds to go, setting the stage for Slater's game winner.
Robert Dubose topped three double figure scorers for Johnson, finishing with 23 points and seven rebounds. Vernon Slater added 16, including the game winner, and Winston Jones chipped in with 15. Zach Falkenburg (Kirkville, NY) paced the Hornets with a game high 25 points and five assists. Damon Denteh (Jamaica, NY) and Ricky Shuford (Prattville, AL) also reached double figures with 12 and ten points respectively.
The Hornets return to action next weekend with back to back home games against UMaine-Presque Isle. The Hornets and Owls will square off Friday evening at 5:30 pm, then again Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm.
