Bangor, ME - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's basketball team fell behind early and never recovered, falling 94-55 to Husson University in a North Atlantic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon. Husson improves to 13-2 overall and 9-2 in NAC play with the win, while the Hornets fall to 3-19 and 1-10 in conference.
Lyndon was ice cold from the floor in the first half, connecting on only one field goal in the game's first seven minutes and falling behind 21-4. The Hornets were then able to stage a brief rally, as Luke Fredsell's (Whitesboro, NY) three-pointer ignited a 15-9 spurt that was capped by a Damon Denteh (Jamaica) three to cut the Eagle lead to 30-19 with 7:05 to go in the opening half. That was as close as the Hornets would get, however, as Husson would go on a 19-2 run over the final seven minutes to take a 49-21 lead into halftime. The Hornets connected on only six of 32 (18.8%) attempts, including only three of 17 (17.6%) from beyond the arc in the opening stanza, while the Eagles converted 19 of 34 (55.9%) of their shots.
The Hornets were able to play the Eagles on much more even terms through much of the second half but they weren't able to cut into the deficit significantly. Husson closed the game on a 13-5 run to account for the final margin. For the game the Hornets only made 19 of 69 (27.5%) shots, while the Eagles connected on 39 of 72 (54.2%) attempts. Husson held a 52-35 rebounding advantage and forced 19 Hornet turnovers will committing 17 themselves.
Justin Martin led Husson with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Justin Thompson added 22 points and five assists, while Bruce St. Peter and DJ Bussey chipped in 12 and ten points respectively. The Hornets didn't place anyone in double figures, as Kyle Cary (Selkirk, NY) topped the Lyndon stat sheet with nine points. Dylan Torello (Port St. Lucie, FL) grabbed a team best five rebounds, while Fredsell and Zach Falkenburg (Kirkville, NY) each dished out three assists.
The Hornets will travel to SUNY Canton for a pair of NAC contests next weekend. They will tip off against the Roos at 5:30 pm on Friday and again on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm.
