Waterville, ME - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon freshman guard Zach Falkenburg (Kirkville, NY) has been named the North Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Week for the week ending February 3rd, as announced by the conference office on Monday. He is the first Hornet to receive weekly conference honors since Ty Roane (North Bend, OR) was named NAC Rookie of the Week in February of 2016.
Falkenburg made several pivotal plays in Lyndon's 87-82 win at Maine Maritime Academy on Friday evening. His driving layup just before halftime sent the Hornets into the break with an 11-point lead. In the second half he hit a big three-pointer to keep the Mariners at bay, then converted seven free throws in the final 1:07 to preserve the victory. He finished with 12 points and a team best six assists against only one turnover.
Falkenburg is averaging 11.0 points and 2.5 assists per game on the season. In NAC contests he leads the Hornets with 12.6 points per game, and is the only freshman to be ranked in the top 16 in scoring. He is also shooting 53.7% from the floor in conference play, 5th best in the NAC and the only freshman in the top 17. He is also averaging 3.3 assists per game in conference, good for 8th place.
