Canton, NY - On a night where both teams had their offenses rolling the Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's basketball team came up on the short end of a 107-97 decision at SUNY Canton. The host Roos improve to 12-12 on the season and 8-5 in North atlantic Conference play, while the Hornets fall to 3-20 overall and 1-11 in the NAC.
Canton's Robert Holliday Jr. was the story of the first half, as he scored 22 points on 9 of 11 shooting to pace Canton to a 52-44 halftime lead. The Hornets scored six straight points on baskets by Zach Falkenburg (Kirkville, NY), Kyle Cary (Selkirk, NY), and Damon Denteh (Jamiaca, NY) to cut the deficit to two at the start of the second half, but Canton responded with back to back threes from Holliday and Jordan Stewart to move the lead back to eight.
Canton extended their advantage to as much as 16 midway through the second half before the Hornets mounted another charge. Rian Hayman-Jones (St. Johnsbury, VT) scored on an inbounds set with 2:00 to go in the game to narrow the Canton lead to 97-94. That was as close as the Hornets wouyld get, However, as the Roos salted the game away from the foul line.
Both teams had big nights shooting the ball. Canton connected on 38 of 70 (54.3%) shots from the floor, including 18 of 38 (47.4%) from behind the three-point arc. Lyndon converted 37 of 70 (52.9%), including ten of 25 (40.0%) from long range. The Roos held a 43-27 rebounding advantage but the Hornets forced 21 Canton turnovers while committing only 12 themselves.
Holliday finished with a game high 30 points to lead Canton. Danny Santana and Brandon Adkisson added 17 points each as six different Canton players reached double figures. Falkenburg led Lyndon with 20 points, 18 in the second half. Denteh finished with 18 points and recorded team highs with six rebounds and five assists. Hayman-Jones chipped in 14 points while Cary and Ricky Shuford (Prattville, AL)tallied 12 points apiece.
The Hornets and Roos will tip off again at 1:00 pm Saturday in Canton.
