Late goal pushes Becker past Hornet men

Leicester, MA - Becker College's Nicholas Mariano (Cranston, RI) scored a man up goal with 2:20 remaining to give the host Hawks a 9-8 non-conference victory on Monday afternoon.  The loss drops the Hornets to 1-3 on the season, while Becker evens their record at 1-1.

Becker broke through first with 6:53 to go in the opening period when Blake Gordon (East Greenbush, NY) scored unassisted.  The Hornets answered when Shea Jones (Hull, MA) scored off of a feed from James Ciglia (Oyster Bay, NY) with only 16 seconds to go in the period.

Becker went back in front less than a minute into the second period when Jack Schneider (Morrisville, VT) found the net with an assist from Avay Chaganty (Bridgewater, NJ).  Lyndon tied things three minutes later when Jones found Zachary Carey (Exeter, NH) for a man up goal.  Mariano's unassisted goal put Becker back in front, but Jones and Carey both found the net to give the Hornets a 4-3 advantage heading into halftime.

Becker scored two goals, one from Schneider and the other from Chaganty, 21 seconds apart almost ten minutes into the third quarter to go back in front.  Jones then scored unassisted, his third goal of the contest, with 4:16 to go in the period.  However, Becker's Matthew Guerin (East Longmeadow, MA) scored unassisted with just under two minutes to go in the quarter to send the Hawks into the final period with a 6-5 lead.

Chaganty scored off of an assist from Denis Isufaj (Worcester, MA) 41 seconds into the final period to give the Hawks a two goal advantage.  The Hornets were then able to run off three straight goals, one each from Spencer Aubin (Sharon, MA), Konner Bick (North Syracuse, NY), and Anthony Townsend (Pembroke, MA) to put Lyndon back in front, 9-8, with 9:11 to go.  The lead was short lived, however, as Guerin tied things up, with assists from Gordon and Chaganty, just 19 seconds later.

Lyndon had a great chance to take the lead late.  After Brandon Hunter (Glastonbury, CT) recovered a ground ball, Jones hit the post, and Becker was able to clear.  With 2:30 to go, Lyndon was called for a slashing penalty, setting the stage for Mariano's heroics.  Gordon found Mariano ten seconds later, and Mariano converted to give the Hawks the game winner.  The Hornets had three chances to get the equalizer, but Becker goalie Trey McMillen (Grapevine, TX) turned away Ceglia and Jones.  Jones had one last shot with nine seconds remaining, but it sailed wide.

Becker outshot Lyndon, 48-43.  McMillen stopped 13 of 21 Hornet shots on goal, while Marcus Bessette (Pembroke, NH) stopped 18 of 27.  Becker held the advantage in ground balls, 29-16, and in face offs won, 12-7.  The Hornets turned the ball ove 21 times, compared to 19 for the Hawks.

Lyndon will travel to Albertus Magnus College for a non-league contest this Friday evening at 7:00 pm.  Becker will travel to Maine Maritime Academy on Wednesday.
