Nashua, NH - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's lacrosse team faced an early six goal deficit and never recovered, dropping a 17-7 non-conference decision at Rivier University on Wednesday evening. With the loss, the Hornets fall to 0-2 on the campaign, while the Raiders remain unbeaten in four starts.
Rivier's Colby Larsen scored the first goal of the contest less than four minutes in. Eric Guinasso followed with the first of his five goals less than a minute later, and the hosts followed with four more tallies before the game was ten minutes old. Anthony Townsend (Pembroke, MA) got Lyndon on the board with 3:42 to go in the opening quarter, and Callan Singer's (St. Johnsbury, VT) unassisted goal with 38 seconds remaining in the quarter cut the deficit to 6-2. Guissano's third goal of the quarter then made it 7-2 after one.
Rivier then tallied four goals in the second quarter, while keeping the Hornets off the scoreboard, to extend their advantage to 11-2 at the break.
Lyndon attempted to get back in it in the third quarter. After Larsen's man-up goal 1:04 in put the Raiders in front by ten, Taner Onor (East Montpelier, VT) broke the Rivier run with an unassisted score three minutes in, but Guissano answered four minutes later. Lyndon then siezed some momentum later in the quarter. Spencer Aubin (Sharon, MA) notched an unassisted goal at the 6:37 mark, then found Shea Jones (Hull, MA) just over a minute later. Onor's second goal at the 3:40 mark lgot the Hornets back to within 13-7. Rivier's Rob Fullerton then found the back of the net with 43 seconds to go in the quarter to make the score 14-6 after three.
Rivier extinguished any hopes of a Hornet comeback by scoring three unanswered goals to begin the opening quarter. Onur's man-up goal with five seconds remaining completed the scoring.
Guissano picked up four assists to go along with his five goals to head the Raider attack. Fullerton added three goals and five assists, whiole Chris Pennie chipped in a pair of goals and a pair of assists. Onor's three goals paced Lyndon. Aubin added a goal and two assists, while Justin Servidori (Yarmouth, MA) recorded a game high five ground balls.
Matt Cloutman went most of the way to pick up the win in goal. He was relieved by Jake DeStefano for the final three minutes. The pair combined to stop 11 Hornet shots. Camden LeClair (Colchester, VT) and Aaron Florence (Mandeville, LA) each played a half in goal for Lyndon. LeClair stopped three of the 14 shots on goal he faced, while Florence stopped 15 of 21.
The Hornets return to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Mitchell College for a 2:00 pm start.
