Canton, NY - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's lacrosse team attenpted to rally from an eight goal deficit, but came up short, falling 13-8 in a North Atlantic Conference game at SUNY Canton on Saturday afternoon. The host Roos improve to 5-6 overall and 3-0 in NAC play, while the Hornets fall to 1-6 on the season and 1-2 in NAC play.
The Roos got on the board first when Jacob Facey scored off of an assist from Noah Robinson at the 12:49 mark of the first quarter. Robinson found Facey for another goal just over two minutes later, then Josh Yelvington found the net at the 10:04 mark to make it 3-0, Canton. Taner Onor (East Montpelier, VT) got the Hornets on the board with an unassisted goal at the 7:59 mark, but Canton responded with a man-up goal from Robinson and a pair of goals from Yelvington to put the Roos in front, 6-1, after one.
Canton added three more goals in just over four minutes to start the second quarter, as Facey, Robinson, and Hunter Olsen each found the back of the net. Lyndon's Shea Jones (Hull, MA) recorded an unassisted goal with 10:20 to make the score 9-2, and it stayed that way the rest of the half.
After more than five more scoreless minutes to open the third quarter, Yelvington found Olsen, who found the net to extend the Roos' advantage to 10-2. Lyndon then started to climb back into the game, as Onor scored an unassisted goal at the 8:37 mark and Jones followed with a pair of tallies to make it a 10-5 game through three quarters.
The Hornets climbed closer 45 seconds into the fourth quarter, as Spencer Aubin (Sharon, MA) found Nick Clark (Swanton, VT), who converted to cut the Canton lead to 10-6. Canton got one goal back when Yelvington notched his fourth goal of the game with 8:00 to go. Dante Coco added another goal for the Roos, before Onor found Justin Servidori (Yarmouth, MA) with 3:34 to go and Jones picked up his fourth unassisted goal of the game just over a minute later. Robinson's man-up goal with 1:58 to go completed the scoring.
Canton outshot Lyndon 48-38 and held a 50-31 advantage in ground balls. The Roos also dominated the X, winning 19 of 25 faceoffs. Canton goalies Kody Kocsis and Justin LaDuke combined for 14 saves, with Kocsis picking up the win. Hornet goalie Aaron Florence (Mandeville, LA) made 22 saves in absorbing the loss.
The Hornets return to action next Saturday when they host SUNY Delhi in another NAC contest. The opening faceoff on Varsity Field is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
