Bangor, ME - The Lyndon State College men's soccer team's weekend trip to Maine got off on the wrong foot, as the Hornets dropped a 4-0 North Atlantic conference decision to Husson University on Saturday afternoon. With the win Husson improves to 4-4 and 3-2 in NAC play. Lyndon falls to 4-3 and 1-3 in the NAC.
Although Husson controled play for much of the first half, neither team was able to break through for over 40 minutes. In the 41st minute, Nathan Firlings (Waterbury, CT) scored from in front of the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Eagles broke things open early in the second half, as Firlings, Mighel Caballero (Orono, ME), and Alvaro Valls (Valencia, Spain) each found the net in a span of under 8 minutes.
For the game, Husson outshot the Hornets, 24-7 and held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks. Senior Matt LaClair (Beekmantown, NY) made five saves in goal for the Hornets. freshman Dominic Kane relieved LaClair for the final nine minutes and didn't face a shot on goal. Cody Gross (Fair Lawn, NJ) made three saves for the Eagles.
Lyndon completes its Maine roadtrip tomorrow at noon with a contest at Maine Maritime Academy. The Hornets return home to face Southern Vermont College on Tuesday at 3:30 pm on Varsity Field. Husson will face Johnson State College tomorrow.
