Manchester, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's soccer team battled Southern Vermont College into overtime before coming up on the short end of a 2-1 final in Saturday's first round of the LINAO Mountaineer Invitational. The Hornets fall to 0-3 on the season, whiel the Mountaineers picked up their first win in four starts. The Hornets will now face NVU-Johnson, a 2-1 loser to Curry College in Saturday's other contest, in Sunday's consolation match at 12:00 pm. Southern Vermont and Curry will square off for the tournament championship at 2:30 pm.
The two sides battled on even terms throughout much of the first half. The Mountaineers were called for a foul in the box at the 40:42 mark of the half, and Lyndon's Abukar Hassan (South Burlington, VT) converted the PK, beating Southern Vermont keeper Diego Uqillas down the middle. The Hornets would take the 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Southern Vermont got the equalizer in the 66th minute when Nikols Joseph converted a cross from Lee Daniels to tie the match at 1-1. Lyndon's Hunter Torrey (Newbury, VT) had a great opportunity to give the Hornets the lead back with just under 5 minutes to go, but Uqullas made a diving stop on his blast.
The two teams headed to overtime, with the Mountaineers mounting the only scoring chances in the extra session. Just over six minutes in Southern Vermont's Nick Langat lofted a shot from 40 yards out that bounced off the goal frame. A minute later Langat ended the game when he deposited a shot from 25 yards out into the lower right corner of the net.
Southern Vermont outshot Lyndon 17-13 for the game. Hornet goalkeeper Dennis Farnham III (Orono, ME) made four saves while Uquillas made five stops for the Mountaineers.
