Hornet men drop a tightly contested match to Maine Maritime

Castine, ME - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's soccer team traveled to Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday evening.  Unfortunately for the Hornets they came up on the short end of a 1-0 score in a very tightly contested match.  The Hornets fall to 1-8 on the season and 1-2 in the North Atlantic Conference while the Mariners improve to 4-4-1 overall and 3-1 in the NAC.

Maine Maritime's Evan Backus scored what would turn out to be the only goal of the match when he headed in a cross from Matthew Caron in the 41st minute.  The Mariners made that goal stand up, as neither team could find the back of the net in the second half.

The Mariners outshot the Hornets 20-6 for the game.  Hunter Torrey (Newbury, VT) recorded three of Lyndon's six shots.  Caleb Derbyshire (Barton, VT) made nine saves in goal for the Hornets, while his Mustang counterpart Joshua Reeks made four stops and picked up the win.

The Hornets return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they host NVU-Johnson in a key NAC contest.  Kickoff is set for 3:30 pm on Varsity Field.
