Hornet men's soccer to host NVU Invitational this weekend

Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's soccer team will kick off the 2019 season by hosting the inaugural Northern Vermont University Invitational on Varsity Field this Friday and Saturday.  The Hornets are looking to bounce back from their 2018 campaign, which saw them finish with a 1-14 overall record and a 1-6 mark in North Atlantic Conference play.

The Hornets will kick off the tournament with a 2:00 pm matchup against Vermont Technical College on Friday afternoon.  NVU-Johnson will take on Fisher College in the day one nightcap at 4:30 pm.  The tournament will conclude on Saturday, with Johnson and Vermont Tech squaring off at noon, followed by Lyndon versus Fisher at 2:30.

The Hornets will be led by captains Sam Ognenoff (Brattleboro, VT), a senior forward, and Caleb Derbyshire (Barton, VT), a junior goalkeeper.  Ognenoff played in 13 games a year ago, recording one goal on 15 shots.  Derbyshire recorded a NAC-best 111 saves in 12 starts in 2018.  His .730 save percentage ranked fourth among NAC keepers.

Freshmen Alex Bryant (Topsham, ME) and Garrick Webster (Terryville, CT) and transfer Chris Trifilio (Williston, VT) head up a promising group of newcomers who will bring fresh energy to the program.

Fifth year Hornet head coach Rob Carey remarked " We will be a young and hungry team with a new face, new outlook and a refreshed approach!  This season we will have a new identity, tactics and philosophy.  We are all very hungry and excited to begin this process and this season!"

The Hornets have been picked to finish 8th in the NAC 2019 pre-season coaches poll.  Thomas College was picked to finish first in the conference, with Maine Maritime Academy tabbed for second.  The predicted order of finish is:

T4.  SUNY Delhi
T4.  SUNY Canton
6.  Northern Vermont University-Johnson
7.  University of Maine at Farmington
