Johnson, VT - Northern Vermont University's two men's soccer teams battled each other and the elements on Tuesday afternoon. On a wet pitch and a rainy day host NVU-Johnson came away with a 3-0 victory over NVU-Lyndon in a North Atlantic Conference matchup. The Badgers pick up their first conference win in three starts and even their overall record at 4-4-1. The Hornets drop to 0-8-1 on the season and 0-3 in the NAC.
The Hornets two scoring opportunities in the opening minutes when Drew Germain (Tiverton, RI) and Sam Ognenoff (Brattleboro, VT) put shots on the Johnson goal, but Badger goalkeeper Zach Blaser turned both away. Johnson then got on the scoreboard early when Daniel Arriola found the back of the net in the seventh minute. The Badgers made it 2-0 in th 18th minute when Marquiss Cruz scored off of an assist from Tristan Salgado. Things stayed that way for the rest of the opening half, as Hornet goalkeeper Caleb Derbyshire (Barton, VT) made six first half saves to keep Lyndon in the game.
Neither team was able to break through on the soft track early in the second half. Johnson eventually tacked on an insurance goal from Rob Buonanno in the 77th minute to account for the final score.
The Badgers outshot the Hornets 31-4 over the contest and held a 13-3 advantage in corner kicks. Derbyshire finished with ten saves, while Blaser wasn't called upon to make a save after the two early stops.
The Hornets return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Husson University. Kickoff on Varsity Field is set for 1:00 pm.
