ST. ALBANS, Vt. – The Lyndon State College men's tennis team fell to Castleton University 9-0 in a North Atlantic Conference match at the Collins Perley Sport and Fitness Sunday afternoon.
Seth Marcil and Quentin Barthe got things started to the Spartans at the No. 1 doubles spot with an 8-1 win over Tyler Hall (Keene, N.H.) and Jake LaCerda (Gray, Maine) while Ryan Mulder and Tyler Wilcox took No. 2 doubles over Michael Sigsbury (Pownal, Vt.) and Dylan Cherko (Manchester, Conn.) also by a score of 8-1. Jared Wheeler and Nate Hinson of Castleton finished out doubles with an 8-0 win over Bradley Shumway (Bloomingdale, N.Y.) and Neal Mulligan (Marshfield, Vt.) for the 3-0 lead heading into the singles matches.
Marcil and Hall faced off in a tight No. 1 singles match with Marcil taking it 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). Barthe forced LaCerda to a third set in No. 2 singles after falling behind in the first set and eventually won the match 3-6, 6-0, 10-7.
Mulder defeated Sigsbury 6-3, 6-1 in No. 3 singles while Wheeler cruised to a 6-0. 6-0 victory over Cherko in No. 4 singles.
Wilcox grabbed a 6-2, 6-2 win over Mulligan in No. 5 singles as Hinson finished out the No. 6 singles with a win by retirement (6-0, 3-0) over Ken Niemann (Au Sable Forks, N.Y.).
The Hornets (1-8, 0-3 NAC) travel to Colby-Sawyer College Friday for a conference match at 4:00 p.m.
The Spartans (7-1, 2-0 NAC) host conference opponent MCLA on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
