Castleton, VT - The Lyndon State College men's tennis team opened North Atlantic Conference play on Saturday afternoon, falling 9-0 at Castleton University. The loss drops the Hornets to 0-5 on the season, while the Spartans improve to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in conference.
Castleton grabbed a 3-0 lead by sweeping all three doubles contests, as the Hornets were only able to win five games total.
In singles, Castleton picked up straight set victories in all six flights, although Lyndon's Neal Mulligan (Marshfield, VT) and Jeremy Polonia (Lynn, MA) made highly competitive showings. Mulligan fell to Castleton's Jared Wheeler (Coventry, RI) 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) at second singles, while Abdullahi dropped a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) decision to the Spartans' Ethan Cameron-Vaupel (Colchester, VT) at sixth singles. No other Hornet captured more than four games in their match.
Lyndon will play tomorrow (Sunday) against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. That match has been moved to the Bennington Tennis Center in Bennington, VT. Castleton will play Johnson State College on Sunday.
