Bennington, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's tennis team fell to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts 8-1 on Saturday afternoon. Bennington Tennis Center played host to the match, which saw the Trailblazers improve to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in NAC play. The Hornets remain winless in five matches on the season.
The match began with doubles play, as MCLA captured all three flights. First flight was very tightly contested, with the Trailblazer duo of Charles Najimy and Matt Bluteau edging the Lyndon team of Patrick Wickstrom (Lafayette, LA) and Neal Mulligan (Marshfield, VT), 8-6. Nick Castle and Samantha Gawron bested Kyle Leighton (Burrillville, RI) and Mukhtar Sheikh Abdullahi (Mogadishu, Somalia), 8-2, in #2 doubles and Briana Higgins and Mackenna Jordan defeated Jeremy Polonia (Lynn, MA) and Abukar Hassan (Kenya) at #3 doubles, 8-1.
In singles play, Mulligan won a very tight #2 singles match over Bluteau, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4) for Lyndon's only flight win. Najimy picked up a three-set, 2-6, 6-1, 10-5 win over Wickstrom at #1 singles. The Trailblazers captured the other four singles flights in straight sets. Castle topped Leighton 6-2, 6-3 at #3, Gawron swept Abdullahi 6-0, 6-0 at #4, Higgins bested Polonia 6-2, 6-4 at #5, and Felix Bou downed Hassan 6-1, 6-1 at #6.
The Hornets play at SUNY Delhi on Sunday morning at 11:00 am.
