Colchester, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's tennis team was swept, 7-0, by St. Michael's College on Tuesday afternoon. The host Purple Eagles, an NCAA Division II program, improve to 6-12 on the season, while the Hornets remain winless in seven matches.
The Purple Eagles took the first point of the match by sweepint the three doubles sets. St. Michael's Matt Mosher and Constantin Krogh defeated Lyndon's Patrick Wickstrom (Lafayette, LA) and Neal Mulligan (Marshfield, VT), 8-1, at first doubles. The Purple Knight #2 duo of Dan Foley and Cam Maher also picked up an 8-1 win over Lyndon's Mukhtar Sheikh Abdullahi (Mogadishu, Somalia) and Kyle Leighton (Burrillville, RI). St. Michael's took #3 doubles by an 8-0 score.
In singles play, Mulligan and St. Michael's Max Allen played the most tightly contested match of the day at #2. Allen prevailed in two tight sets, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6). Mosher defeated Abdullahi 6-0, 6-1 at #3, and Maher downed Lyndon's Abukar Hassan (Kenya) 6-1, 6-0 at #6. The Hornets failed to win a game in the other three singles flights.
Lyndon returns to the courts this Sunday when they host Thomas College in a North Atlantic Conference matchup. The Match will be played at Topnotch Resort in Stowe, VT. Play will begin at 9:00 am.
