Stowe, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's tennis team hosted Thomas College at Topnotch Resort on Sunday morning. The Terriers captured the North Atlantic Conference matchup, 9-0. Thomas currently sits atop the NAC standings with a 4-0 conference mark. They raised their overall record to 8-4. The Hornets are still seeking their first win after eight matchesm including three in conference.
Thomas started the match with a sweep of the three doubles flights. At first flight the Terrier duo of Ryan Chasse and Kaleb Payson downd the Lyndon team of Patrick Wickstrom (Lafayette, LA) and Neal Mulligan (Marshfield, VT), 8-2. Jared Waterhouse and Yontz Sutton of Thomas defeated the Hornets' Mukhtar Sheikh Abdullahi (Mogadishu, Somalia) and Kyle Leighton (Burrillville, RI) at #2, also by an 8-2 margin. At #3 doubles, the Terriers' Jose Alfonso and John Farrington picked up an 8-1 win over Lyndon's Zach Falkenburg (Kirkville, NY) and Abukar Hassan (Kenya).
The best match of the day came between Mulligan and Payson at second singles. Payson prevailed 7-5, 6-3 in two hard fought sets. Alfonso picked up a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Falkenburg at #5. At #4, Sutton downed Leighton 6-1, 6-1. Princiel Kunieki of Thomas defeated Hassan 6-1, 6-0 at #6. Chasse bested Wickstrom and Waterhouse topped Abdullahi at first and fifth singles respectively, both by 6-0, 6-0 scores.
The Hornet will head to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts for a non-conference match on Tuesday. Play will begin with the doubles flights at 4:00 pm.
