Mulligan and Wickstrom sweep NAC weekly men's tennis honors

Waterville, ME - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's tennis players Neal Mulligan (Marshfield, VT) and Patrick Wickstrom (Lafayette, LA) swept weekly North Atlantic Conference honors, as announced by the conference office on Monday.  Mulligan was named the Men's Tennis Player of the Week and Wickstrom was named the Rookie of the Week for the week ending April 21st.  They are the first Hornet players to receive NAC weekly men's tennis honors since Dylan Cherko was named Player of the Week in March of 2017.

Mulligan, a junior business administration major, was a combined 6-0 on the week.  Playing #2 singles, he opened the week with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts' Matt Bluteau.  He then picked up a pair of wins over NVU-Johnson's John Folsom, defeating him 6-1, 6-2 last Wednesday and 6-1, 6-1 in the Hornets' playoff berth clinching win over the Badgers on Saturday.  Mulligan also teamed with Wickstrom to win all three of their 1st doubles matches last week.  Mulligan has a 5-5 record playing #2 singles this season, the best record of any Hornet in any flight.  He is 5-3 against NCAA Division III opponents and 3-1 in NAC matches.

Wickstrom, a freshman atmospheric sciences major, also posted a perfect 6-0 week.  In addition to his three #1 doubles wins with Mulligan, he also swept three #1 singles matches.  Last Tuesday he defeated Charles Najimy of MCLA 7-5, 7-5.  He then posted two wins over Johnson's Austin Walters, besting him 6-1, 6-1 in last Wednesday's non-conference match, then battling to a 6-0, 2-6, 1-0 (12-10) win in the deciding match to clinch Lyndon's playoff berth,  In that match Wickstrom fought off three match points before pulling out the victory.

Mulligan, Wickstrom, and the Hornets have earned the #4 seed for this Saturday's NAC East Championship Tournament, their first tournament berth since 2014.  Lyndon will face top seed Thomas College in one of Saturday's semi-finals.  #2 MCLA and #3 SUNY Delhi will meet in the other semi, with the two winners squaring off for the NAC East Championship.  Match times and order will be announced later this week.
