Hornet track & field looks for strong individual finishes at NAC Championships.

Lyndonville, VT - Members of the Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's and womens's track and field teams will be looking to compete for North Atlantic Conference honors and personal records this weekend.  NAC team and individual championshiops will be contested within the Inter-Conference Combined Championship hosted by Regis College on Saturday and Sunday.  The meet will include athletes from the NAC, as well as the Great Northeast Athletic Conference and the New England Collegiate Conference.  Each conference will crown their own conference champions and overall meet champions will be crowned as well.

The Hornet women have been picked to finish fifth as voted on by conference coaches in the pre-championship poll and releasd by the conference office today.  Abby Salvadore (Portsmouth, NH) is one of the favorites in javelin, having already posted a mark of 39.05 meters to qualify for the NCAA New England Regionals.  Zosia Prince (Sutton, VT), the NAC women's cross country individual champion last fall, is a threat in the 5,000 meter run.  Jessica Hillman (Gardiner, ME) will also have a chance to place in the long jump and the 110 meter high hurdles.

The women's predicted order of finish, with first place votes in parentheses:

  3. Thomas College 33
  4. University of Maine at Farmington 26
  5. Northern Vermont University-Lyndon 23
  6. Northern Vermont University-Johnson 12
  7. University of Maine at Presque Isle 11

On the men's side, the Hornets have been picked to finish sixth.  Kevin Desmond (Colchester, VT) is expected to be one of the contenders in triple jump.  His best mark this season is 12.38 meters.  Matt Francis (Freeport, ME) should be in the mix in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, and Robert Denton III (Providence, RI) could challenge in javelin.

The men's predicted order of finish:

  3. Thomas College 34
  4. University of Maine at Farmington 29
  5. University of Maine at Presque Isle 20
  6. Northern Vermont University-Lyndon 13
  7. Northern Vermont University-Johnson 9

The meet will begin on Saturday at 3:00 pm, and continue starting at 9:00 am on Sunday.
