LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – The Lyndon State College softball team continued their season Thursday afternoon in a doubleheader with Norwich University at Skip Pound Field, dropping game one 6-0 and game two 17-0.
The Cadets capitalized on some early mistakes from the Hornets, scoring one run in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) that scored Katie Reid (Gold Canyon, Ariz.).
Norwich threatened to score again in the top of the second as they put two runners on. However, pitcher Shelby Sheridan (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) struck out the next batter and then forced a ground out to get out of the inning.
The Hornets put two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the fourth as Hannah Choiniere (Highgate, Vt.) walked and then Brooke Dolloff (Rumford, Maine) singled up the middle for the Hornets. Norwich pitcher Rachel Johnson (Stockbridge, Vt.) forced a pop up to short stop to end the inning after giving up her first hit of the game.
The Cadets picked up three runs in the top of the fifth starting with a double from Naomi Rinaldo (Middlefield, Conn.) that plated Justina George (Wallingford, Conn.) from first base. Back-to-back singles brought in Rinaldo and Mckenna Wade (Pensacola, Fla.) for the 4-0 lead.
The Cadets picked up another run in the sixth and seventh innings as Reid and Olivia Bussiere (Northfield, Vt.) came in on RBI singles from Rinaldo and Maria Cuccurullo (Brick, N.J.).
Sheridan threw all seven innings for the Hornets in the loss, striking out five while allowing 11 hits and six runs (five earned).
Johnson picked up her seventh win of the season in the complete-game, one-hit shutout after striking out 16.
Again, the Cadets struck in the opening frame as they picked up two runs. Reid came home on a wild pitch while George came across on a single from Rinaldo.
Norwich then rallied for five runs each in the next two innings for the 12-0 lead.
Makayla Epps (Foxboro, Mass.) drove a ball to right center for a single to give the Hornets their first hit in the bottom of the third but Norwich pitcher Emily Oliver was able to retire the next two batters to get out of the inning.
The Cadets tallied two more runs in the top of the fourth. The first on a wild pitch and then the second on a single to left. The Hornets were able to record the third out of the inning at third on the same play, but not before Kaylee Blanchard (Worcester, Mass.) made it home for the 14-0 lead.
Kiya DeWitt (Pittsburg, N.H.) led off the bottom half of the fourth with a single and then was able to make her way around to third on a ground out and a wild pitch. Dolloff hit a dribbler to the right side and DeWitt made a break for home in an effort to notch the Hornets' first run of the game but was thrown out at home as Oliver was able to come out of the circle and make the play.
Norwich tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth before getting three outs in the bottom of the frame to take the game 17-0 in five innings.
Alexis Madore (South Royalton, Vt.) suffered the loss in the circle for Lyndon after pitching 1.2 innings.
Oliver recorded her third win of the season in five innings of work with six strikeouts.
