Chestnut Hill, MA - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon softball team picked up their first wins of the season on Wednesday, sweeping a doubleheader against Pine Manor College. The Hornets took game one, 10-6, and got the bats going for a 21-9 win in the nightcap. Lyndon moves to 2-14 on the season while Pine Manor remains winless in 14 games.
Game 1 - NVU-Lyndon 10, Pine Manor 6
The Hornets took advantage of nine Gator errors to score ten runs on only six hits. With the game tied at six going into the seventh inning, Melissa Calabro (New Canaan, CT) reached on an error to start off the inning. Paige Daley (Pleasant Valley, NY) then reached on another error, and a second error on the play allowed Calabro to come around and score to give the Hornets the lead. Cecilia Chamul (Concord, VT) singled home Daley then Emma Corey (Concord, VT) and Madeline DeGroot (Canton, ME) reached ontwo more Gator errors and Chamul scored. When Emma Moore (Hillsborough, NH) reached on a fielder's choice, Corey scored Lyndon's fourth run of the inning. Hornet pitcher Amber Roberts (Berlin, NH) then closed the door on Pine Manor in the bottom of the inning and the Hornets had their first win of the season.
DeGroot had a big day at the plate, delivering a single and a double and driving in three runs. Chamul and Cassandra Black had two singles apiece, with Chamul scoring three times and Black driving in a pair. Roberts got the win, going the distance and allowing only three earned runs while striking out four.
Pine Manor produced ten hits, but left eight runners on. Ashley Smith went three for four while Kiana Wilkerson and Kiarra Pouncy had two hits apiece and Feven Bedard-Khalid driving in a pair of runs. Gator starting pitcher Kristina Giunta went five innings and allowed four earned runs before taking the loss.
Game 2 - NVU-Lyndon 20, Pine Manor 9
The Hornets scored multiple runs in every inning of the nightcap. Roberts had a huge game at the plate with three hits, including a pair of doubles, and eight runs batted in. Chamul also had three hits and scored five runs. Moore had two hits, four runs batted in, and three runs scored. Corey and DeGroot both scored four times while delivering two hits and two RBIs each. Smith started in the circle and went four innings to pick up the win. Roberts came in and pitched a scoreless fifth to close the door.
For the Gators, Nahalia Faurot had a double and a triple and drove in three runs. Wilkerson, Smith, and Aleah Lauti also had two hits and each scored twice. Smith went the distance pitching and allowed nine earned runs in taking the loss.
The Hornets get back into North Atlantic Conference play this weekend. On Friday, Husson University comes to Lyndon for a 2:00 pm doubleheader. On Saturday, Thomas College comes to town for another doubleheader, this one starting at 2:00 pm.
