Hornet softball sweeps NVU-Johnson

Johnson, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon softball team found two different ways to win on Tuesday, as they swept a doubleheader from NVU-Johnson.  With the sweep, the Hornets improve to 4-16 on the season, while the Badgers drop to 3-21.  The Hornets also avenged a doubleheader sweep by Johnson earlier this season, and split a point in the NVU President's Cup Challenge.

Game 1 - NVU-Lyndon 13, NVU-Johnson 5

The Hornets got the bats going early.  After pushing across two runs in the top of the first inning, they exploded for ten more in the top of the second and cruised from there.  Madeline DeGroot drove in five runs on three hits to lead the Lyndon attack.  Emma Moore (Hillsborough, NH) and Alexis Britch (Essex Junction, VT) also had three hits each and Emma Corey (Concord, VT) added a single and a double.  Amber Roberts (Berlin, NH) wengt the distance in the circle to pick up the win.

Kimberly Reville had a solid game at the plate for the Badgers, with two hits, two runs scored, and a run batted in.  Nicole Mooney also had a pair of singles.  Emily Marshall went the distance in taking the loss.

Game 2 - NVU-Lyndon 4, NVU-Johnson 3

In contrast to the opener, the nightcap was a nail biter throughout.  Roberts delivered an RBI single to put Lyndon in front in the top of the second, but Johnson answered with three runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead.  Corey's two-run base hit in the top of the fourth tied things, and Cassandra Black's (Tolland, CT) RBI single in the sixth inning proved to be the game winner.

Corey and Roberts each had two hits to pace the Hornet attack.  Moore threw four scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.  Laura Dattilio, Lindsey LaPerle, and Annika Dyhrberg each had two hits for the Badgers.  Mooney took the loss in relief.

The Hornets return to North Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday afternoon when they host Thomas College in a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader.  Lyndon will recoginze their senior softball players prior to the first game, which is scheduled for 3:00 pm at the Skip Pound Softball Complex.
