Castleton downs Lyndon for fifth-straight win

CASTLETON, Vt. – Tarryn Bolognani paced four Spartans in double-figures and Vanessa Powers added a double-double to lead Castleton State College to a 70-46 win over Lyndon at Glenbrook Gymnasium.

Bolognani was 7-for-10 from the field to lead the way, and Powers finished with 13 points and 12 boards, including six on the offensive end. Christine Jaques canned a trio of three-pointers and finished with 13 points, while freshman Meghan O'Sullivan added 10 points off the bench. Bolognani rounded out her stat sheet with six rebounds and five assists, and Jaques also added five assists.

Donna Lawson (Irasburg, Vt.) scored a game-high 16 points, including 15 after intermission. Chelsea Watson (Eliot, Maine) added 11 points while Naomi White (Danville, Vt.) chipped in seven points and team-high six boards.

After falling behind 3-0 on a White three-pointer just over one minute into the game, the Spartans used a 19-0 run over the next eight minutes to distance themselves from the Hornets. Jaques hit a pair of three's during the run, and knocked down a pull-up jumper to finish the surge, as Castleton turned its defense into offense forcing nine turnovers during the stretch.

Castleton pushed its lead to 30-8, but a 9-2 Hornet run keyed by three's from Watson, White and Danielle LaFont (Albany, Vt.), knocked the Spartan lead down to 32-17 with five minutes left in the opening stanza. Bolognani then went on a 6-0 run all on her own to push the margin back above 20, picking up a steal and two rebounds during the stretch.

The Spartans led by as many as 27 in the second half, and Lyndon never got closer than 16 before settling in for the final 24-point margin. Castleton finished with 21 assists on 27 field goals, while shooting 42.9% (27-63) from the field. The Spartans defense turned 30 Lyndon turnovers into 33 points and held a 28-14 edge on points in the paint.
