HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College women's basketball team captured their first conference win of the season beating the Lyndon 82-53 in the Pilgrims' home opener Thursday .
With the win the Pilgrims even their overall record at 4-4 and their North Atlantic Conference (NAC) record at 1-1. The loss drops the Hornets to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in NAC play.
Lyndon would grab an early lead and hold on to it for the first five minutes of play before NEC would use and 11-0 run to go up 17-7 at the 11:42 mark. The Pilgrims would extend their lead to as many as 16 in the first half forcing 18 first half Hornet turnovers.
Lyndon would chip away at the lead as Emily Gray (Quincy, Mass.) would hit a three pointer followed by a jumper by Chelsea Bagley (Wallingford, Vt.) in the final minute to head into halftime trailing 36-24.
Lyndon would open the second half with back-to-back three pointers slicing the lead to just six but NEC would have an answer as the Pilgrims would out rebound the Hornets 54-34 on the night and record 20 steals en route to the eventual 82-53 victory.
Leading the way for NEC was Kayla Lawlor who led all scorers finishing with 20 points. NEC's Taylor Burgess finished with a double-double on the evening with 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, while Kiley Williams ripped down nine rebounds to go along with six points.
Leading the way for Lyndon was Gray who finished with a team-high 16 points. Bagley was the only other Hornet in double-figures posting 10 points, while Chelsea Watson (Eliot, Maine) grabbed a team-high five rebounds to go along with nine points.
