CASTLETON, Vt. – The Lyndon State College women's basketball team were defeated by North Atlantic Conference foe Castleton University Saturday afternoon, 80-48.
Mariah Ramos (Lebanon, N.H.) led the Hornets with 15 points while Mikayla Hodge (Newbury, Vt.), the leading scorer and rebounder in the NAC coming into the game, finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Taylor Raiche hit all eight of her field goal attempts as she led the Spartans with a career-high 17 points along with six rebounds. Ashlie Fay also earned a career-high scoring total, finishing with 13 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
Lyndon took an early 7-2 lead before a jumper by Raiche and a three-pointer from Makayla Farrara tied the game at 7-7. The Hornets retook the lead thanks to a layup by Hodge and two three-pointers from Alexis Britch (Essex Junction, Vt.), but a three-pointer by Lindsay Sabo with 1:31 left in the first quarter cut the Hornet lead to 15-13 after the first 10 minutes of the game.
A three and a layup from Raiche gave the Spartans their first lead of the game, but a trey from Gabrielle Foy (Wilton, Maine) tied it up at 18-18. The Hornets were held to just seven points over the remaining eight minutes of the second quarter as the Spartans put up 23 points over that span to go into the break up 41-25.
The Spartans continued to shoot well from the field in the second half as they outscored the Hornets 25-15 in the third quarter and 14-8 in the final stanza.
Lyndon (3-4, 1-2 NAC) go on break for the remainder of 2016 and return to play at home on Tuesday, January against New England College at 7:30 p.m.
Castleton (6-1, 4-1 NAC) travels to Norwich on Tuesday, December 13 for a 7:30 p.m. start.
