LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – The Lyndon State College women's basketball team started the 2017 year off with a tough 80-64 North Atlantic Conference loss to New England College Tuesday night in Stannard Gymnasium.
The host team was led by Mikayla Hodge (Newbury, Vt.) with another double-double of 19 points and 18 rebounds. Gabrielle Foy (Wilton, Maine) contributed 15 points and three assists while Alissa Mitchell (Milton, N.H.) pitched in 11 points.
The visitors rode on the back of Rene Hudson's (Gallatin, Tenn.) 29 points and 8 rebounds. Tiffany Davis (Baltimore, Md.) and Mikala Malboeuf (Fitchburg, Mass.) added 9 and 12 points, respectively.
The Pilgrims started out hot on a 13-0 run until Mitchell tossed in a layup. The visitors collected seven more points until Mariah Ramos (Lebanon, N.H.) drained a trey off of an assist from Mitchell. The Hornets finished off the quarter with six more points to the Pilgrims seven, trailing 27-11.
After five points from the Pilgrims, the Hornets held them at 32 points as they collected 12 straight, bringing them within nine at the 6:11 mark in the second stanza. The Pilgrims didn't slow down as they finished out the first half with 13 more points to the Hornets seven for the 45-30 lead at the midway point.
The Hornets outscored the Pilgrims 14-13 in the third. Throughout the fourth the teams swapped baskets back and forth with the Pilgrims notching in 22 points to the Hornets 20. The Pilgrims voyaged home with the 80-64 victory.
Lyndon (3-5, 1-3 NAC) hosts Thomas College on Friday, January 6th with a 7:30 p.m. tip.
New England (7-3, 3-2 NAC) will have a Sunday afternoon game at 2:00 p.m. against Bay Path on January 8th.
