Castine, ME - Maine Maritime Academy used an 11-2 run at the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth quarter to break open a close game, as the Mariners pulled away from Lyndon State College for a 67-47 North Atlantic Conference women's basketball victory on Saturday afternoon. The win raises the Mariners' overall record to 16-7 and their conference mark to 11-5. The Hornets fall to 13-10 on the season and 9-7 in NAC play. Maine Maritime also clinched a top four seed in the NAC Championship Tournament, meaning that Lyndon will go on the road as either the #5 or #6 seed in the quarter-final round.
Megan McLean (Eliot, ME) led the Mariners with 18 points. Alayne Felix (Mahopac, NY) added 15 points, six rebounds, and six assists and Melinda Ogden (Searsport, ME) chipped in with 14 points. Mikayla Hodge (Newbury, VT) was Lyndon's only double figure scorer, finishing with 18 points and a game high 14 rebounds.
Maine Maritime outshot Lyndon from the floor, 41.9% to 31.4%. The Mariner advantage was even greater behind the three-point arc, as the hosts connected on 8 of 19 attempts (42.1%), compared to only 4 of 23 (17.4%) for the Hornets. Maine Maritime owned a 40-32 rebounding advantage, and forced 19 Hornet turnovers, compared to 16 of their own.
Lyndon returns to action on Thursday evening when the travel to Colby-Sawyer College for a 5:30 pm tip-off. Maine Maritime will host Thomas College on Wednesday.
