Hornet women can't find the shooting range in NAC loss to SUNY Canton

Canton, NY - The Northern Vemont University-Lyndon women's basketball team stuggled to find their shooting touch on Friday evening, dropping a 62-48 North Atlantic Conference decision to SUNY Canton.  Canton improves to 11-12 overall and 8-5 in NAC play, while Lyndon falls to 11-11 on the season and 6-6 in conference.

Lyndon's Alisha Celley (Cabot, VT) found Rylee Moore (Livermore, ME) for an open jumper to give the Hornets a 7-4 lead midway through the opening quarter.  However the Roos outscored the Hornets, 8-0, over the last five minutes of the quarter to take a 12-7 lead after one.  Canton then went on a 10-2 run in the first 4:24 of the second quarter to extend their lead to 13, 22-9.  Canton continued to build their advantage, taking a 34-18 lead into halftime.

After Canton's Breanna Cullers scored on the first posession of the second half to make it 36-18, Lyndon began to mount their comeback.  Faith Poirier (Portsmouth, NH)  knocked down three three-point goals and scored 11 points to ignite a 16-2 run that brought the Hornets within 38-34 with 4:10 to go in the third quarter.  Canton regained control, however, scoring the final seven points of the quarter to build the lead back to 11 heading into the final period.  Lyndon was never able to get closer than nine points in the final period, as Canton cruised to the victory.

The Hornets suffered from a cold shooting night, making only 20 of 71 (28.2%) field goal attempts, and only seven of 37 (18.9%) from three-point range.  Meanwhile Canton connected on 24 of 61 (39.1%) of their attempts, including four of 14 (28.6%) from distance.  The Roos also held a 50-39 rebounding advantage.

Autumn Watkins led Canton with 16 points and 13 rebounds.  Anastasia Chambers added 12 points and Cullers and Jenifer Morgan-Aubin chipped in with 11 points apiece.  Lea Crompton (Dunbarton, NH) paced the Hornets with 13 points while Poirier added 11 and Alissa Mitchell (Milton, NH) posted a double double with ten points and ten rebounds and also blocked five shots.

The Hornets and Roos will square off again Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm.
